Connoisseur of Cupcakes

Brittney Timmons
For Dublin’s Linda Kick, the sweet smell of success can be measured with just one whiff. Her unique cupcake bar, Our CupCakery, opened its doors in July, much to the delight of area residents.

“The bar has been very well received,” Kick says. “People can’t get enough of it.”

The establishment gives patrons the opportunity to decorate the confectionery treats themselves. They can choose from among a dozen or so flavors of icing and 15 to 20 toppings, ranging from gummy worms to decorative sprinkles. Cupcake flavors include banana, peanut butter, raspberry and the decadent Devils Chocolate.

For Kick, the top-it-yourself bar is the result of a journey of self-discovery that began four years ago at a school banquet for one of her children. “We needed to have a cake but none of the moms wanted to cut a cake for 150 people,” Kick recalls.
About the same time, Kick was diagnosed with breast cancer. She saw the cupcake business as an outlet.

“I saw it as God’s way of giving me something else to focus on,” she says. “I think it was meant to be.”

Kick utilized her mechanically inclined mind and her entrepreneurial and baking background to create a patent-pending cupcake grid. The grid allows the cupcakes to bake together, forming a solid top that can still be easily pulled apart. Kick says it’s similar to “an over-filled ice cube tray.”

After a friend suggested she begin baking the cakes as a way to sell the grids, her business took off. Kick began teaching baking and decorating classes for neighborhood kids at her kitchen table, a sideline that has blossomed into a variety of courses taught at her new retail location, a quaint downtown building constructed in the 1890s.

The CupCakery also provides a retail market for her formerly made-to-order cakes.

“It’s about doing something creative that looks nice,” she says, “The best part is creating something the customer can be proud of.”
