January 2014 Issue
Editor's Note: New Adventures
Exploration is at the core of being human. Whether it’s curiosity about what’s up around the bend during a long walk in the woods or our eagerness to delve into the past while visiting a museum, we’re wired to gain fresh understanding and new experiences.
That spirit of adventure is also at the heart of what we do each month. Often while traveling throughout the state to research the stories we bring you, we’ll make a detour or stop off to check out something we hadn’t planned to see. Sometimes an attention-grabbing roadside billboard prompts us. Other times, it’s those plain brown highway signs that announce an attraction such as a state park or a historic downtown district is just up ahead at the next exit.
Frequently, these stops lead us to see our state in new and unexpected ways. Our annual Best of Ohio issue is infused with that sort of wonder, too. It’s a compilation of fresh finds and favorites we’ve encountered during the past 12 months.
Our editors’ picks, which start on page 54, reach from the heart of our capital city to the wildest natural area remaining in Ohio. (Did you know there are 16,000 acres of privately owned and protected wilderness in Adams County that the public can visit?)
We found the quirky and the quaint, the elegant and the rustic, the beautiful and the bizarre. (Honestly, how many of us knew there was a 2-foot-long, oversized salamander called a hellbender living in Ohio or that a park in Columbiana County is an ideal place for it to live?)
Our hope is that these picks inspire you to get out and do some exploring of your own in 2014 and that they give you a better understanding of the people who live here and the place we call home.
You may also notice we did something different with the Best of Ohio issue this year. This fall, we asked our readers and website visitors to cast votes for their favorites in 50 categories. We think the Best of Ohio should be a celebration of your favorites as much as it is our finds, and we were pleased so many of you took part. You can check out the list of 2014 Best Of Ohio readers’ ballot winners starting on page 64.
With a new year upon us, we’d like to thank you for letting us share all the great attractions and people that define life here. I’d also like to invite you to tell us about anything you think we should check out while we’re traveling throughout the Buckeye State in 2014 by dropping me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. Maybe we’ll see you out there on the road.
