In Cleveland and its border cities, the local beer industry is what modern sociologists call a boomerang child. City records show that in 1910, Cleveland had 26 small, mostly family-owned breweries within its borders, putting its industry in third place nationally behind Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Sadly, most of these producers ultimately fell victim to Prohibition or big-beer buyouts, leaving the industry with little to call its own. That is, until the late 1980s, when then-newcomer Great Lakes Brewing Company hit the scene, sparking a resurgence in local brewing.
