Apollo’s Fire Presents ‘Wassail! An Irish-Appalachian Christmas’

This northeast Ohio-based baroque orchestra is bringing holiday cheer to the stage this season.

There’s nothing like the warmth of a lively musical performance to lift your spirits as the holiday season sets in. This December, join the Grammy Award-winning baroque ensemble Apollo’s Fire as it brings the story of “Wassail! An Irish-Appalachian Christmas” to four stages across Cleveland and Akron in this annual concert series.

Founded by Jeannette Sorrell in 1992, Apollo’s Fire performs with a commitment to the musical stylings of a baroque orchestra, incorporating period instruments — such as hammered dulcimer, flute, violin and harpsichord — and emphasizing the emotional impact that music should have on its audiences. The group’s signature sound features rich melodies and haunting yet uplifting sequences, which come together to create a unique musical experience.

Audiences will be immersed a collection of carols, reels and traditional British, Irish and Celtic-Appalachian holiday songs, all set against the backdrop of seasonal celebrations in both Ireland and Appalachia, be it a caroling party through the streets of Dublin or a holiday barn dance in Virginia.

Written and designed by Sorrell, “Wassail!” explores themes of immigrants and refugees seeking shelter, reflected in the story of early Irish immigrants as they journey to America. As the daughter of an immigrant, Sorrell was inspired to create the program to highlight the contributions of immigrants in America and to honor their cultural legacy.

“In ‘Wassail!’ we evoke the resilience of the Irish immigrants who bravely crossed the Atlantic,” she said in a press release announcing the performances. “Despite the hardships they have endured, they bring their music with them.”

Joining the 15-member ensemble for the first time in this particular program is the acclaimed children’s group Apollo’s Musettes, which has performed with Apollo’s Fire in over 30 concerts and several recordings. Performances are Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 3 and 4, and Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8. Guests are invited to enjoy a cup of Wassail — a traditional spiced cider, wine or mead — and cookies in the lobby prior to each performance.
