Families flock to Point Park to catch a sternwheel ride to Blennerhassett Island State Park. A 20-minute river excursion takes you to the site of history and intrigue and features the reconstructed Blennerhassett Mansion, guided tours, narrated wagon rides, hiking trails, concessions and picnic facilities. The mansion is the site of the alleged plot by Aaron Burr and Harman Blennerhassett to establish a southwest empire.
After being immersed in the history of Blennerhassett Island, continue your historical journey with a walking tour of Julia-Ann Square Historic District, just steps from downtown Parkersburg. The largest and oldest historic district in West Virginia comprises approximately 126 homes.
Just a short drive from downtown Parkersburg, visit Henderson Hall. Listed on the National Register of Historical Places as a historic district unto itself, it offers a view of the early American Victorian Era. The hall is 8,000 square feet with 21 rooms and was the centerpiece of the original 2,600 acres along the Ohio river.
Explore the vibrant history of Parkersburg’s industrial legacy at the Oil & Gas Museum located downtown. Since 1860, the region has been a pioneering force in the oil industry, and during the years 1906-1917, West Virginia proudly held the title of the top gas producer in the entire United States.
