3 Spots for Outdoor Adventure in Appalachian Ohio

Marietta Adventure Co.'s Ryan Smith shares a few favorites in and around his hometown.

After several years of living out of an RV in California, Ryan Smith returned to his hometown to launch Marietta Adventure Co. in 2011, growing it into a full-service bike and kayak shop. “I wanted to help people open their eyes to what outdoor opportunities we have,” he says.

Marietta Trail Network: Explore 30 miles of single-track, mountain-biking trails that connect with downtown Marietta. “The trails give you the opportunity to have an outdoor experience then roll into town to grab a beer at Marietta Brewing Co.,” Smith says.

Muskingum River: Because Marietta sits at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, paddling options abound. “You can have a really unique experience on a kayak on the Muskingum by going through the historic hand-operated locks and dams,” says Smith.

Buckley Island: This Ohio River island is accessible by kayak from downtown Marietta. “As a part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge, there are several beach areas to stop and hang out along the shores of the island,” Smith says.
