6 Scary Halloween Experiences in Ohio

To the scream seekers across our state, this one's for you. Check out six spots that are dishing out the jump scares this season.

Spooky season is in full swing, and it is prime time to get out there and find scares lurking across the Buckeye State. These experiences are not for the faint of heart, because the costumed actors at each spot are bringing their best, giving people a heart-clutching, jump-out-of-your-skin scare at every bend. Those who want to get their adrenaline pumping this season won't be disappointed by these six experiences, including a mysterious underground cave, a haunted prison and two transformed amusement parks.

Lewisburg Haunted Cave | Select Dates Through Oct. 26
Venture 80 feet below the Earth’s surface where something wicked waits at every turn. Costumed actors in horrifying dress pop up to provide scares during this trek through a real limestone cave. For those looking for something a little milder, the mine wagon tour lets guests go for a ride through the cave and learn about the area’s mining history, while the lights on flashlight tour allows guests a walk through without the costumed actors.

Blood Prison | Select Dates Through Nov. 2
Blood Prison brings epic scares to the shadowy walls of a cellblock that was once full of prisoners. The historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield is creepy enough on its own (and there are many people who say they have experienced the supernatural here), but the main thing to look out for at Blood Prison is the Warden’s Widow. This woman’s hair-raising screams can be heard bouncing off the walls as the “ghosts” of inmates and guards appear from seemingly nowhere.

Cincinnati Fear Fest | Select Dates Through Nov. 2
Visit this scream park to experience three separate spooky attractions: Darkwood Theater, Buzzsaw (a haunted mill themed thrill) and the All Hallows’ Eve Terror Town. General admission to Cincinnati Fear Fest allows guests to experience all three, as well as visits to the shops and restaurants on the campus, located in Williamsburg. Though this haunting experience is full of fun thrills, it is not recommended for children under 12 and parental discretion is advised.

Halloweekends at Cedar Point | Select Dates Through Nov. 2
Once the sun sets over Cedar Point, the creatures of the night, or “Screamsters” as they are known come out to play. Each evening starts with the Opening Scarymonies to meet the Screamsters, before they descend on the Sandusky amusement park, popping up throughout the scare zones as you make your way from coaster to coaster. Halloweekends attendees can enjoy treats, tricks, haunted houses and much more.

Halloween Haunt at Kings Island | Select Dates Through Nov. 2
The whimsical feel of Kings Island disappears each night as something sinister sets in. Halloween Haunt is back for its annual run the Cincinnati-area amusement park. While the daytime is full of no-scare tricks and plenty of treats, the sundown brings creepy creatures, plenty of scares and night rides on beloved coasters from The Beast to the park’s newest giga coaster, Orion.

Spooky Ranch (photo courtesy of Rockin'-R-Ranch)

Spooky Ranch at Rockin'-R-Ranch | Select Dates Through Nov. 3
Billed Cleveland’s scariest haunted hayride, this 25-minute ride at Spooky Ranch (Rockin’-R Ranch’s nighttime Halloween persona) in Columbia Station sends visitors bumping through the fields and seeing larger-than-life animated creatures. There are other attractions to enjoy across the farm as well, including the Extreme Nightmares haunted house, a haunted barn and the eerie Bloodslingers’ Saloon.
