Ohio Winter Fun: Christmas Tree Farms

You could go with an artificial Christmas tree, but where’s the fun in that? Here are three great places to pick your own, straight from the field.

As of Dec. 18, 2023, all farms are closed for the season. Make sure to keep these spots in mind for 2024.

Carl and Dorothy Young’s Christmas Trees,
Yellow Springs
Founded in the 1980s, this Greene County farm is now home to more than 25,000 trees. Visitors can take the wagon shuttle out to the field on weekends to choose and cut down their own tree or select a pre-cut variety. The tree farm has an on-site gift shop with Christmas decorations and accessories as well as free hot chocolate and popcorn. It’s also located just south of Young’s Jersey Dairy, a family-fun destination Carl Young founded with his brothers Bob and Bill. 4968 U.S. 68 N., Yellow Springs 45387, 937/708-6828, youngschristmastreefarm.com

Kaleidoscope Tree Farm, Mount Corey

This Hancock County tree farm has brought owner Dave Reese and his family together to help people ready their homes for the holiday season for well over three decades. The 28-acre farm features nine different tree varieties for customers to choose from. When weather permits, a horse-drawn sleigh or wagon takes customers out into the fields where they can choose the tree they’d like. Staff members assist with cutting down and prepping the purchase for the ride home, while customers are invited to check out the on-site Nativity scene, gift shop and several hiking trails to explore. 14841 County Rd. 54, Mount Corey 45881, 419/722-1154, kaleidoscopefarms.wordpress.com

The Farms at Pine Tree Barn, Wooster
This Wayne County destination has over 75,000 trees on its more than 100 acres. The family-owned Christmas tree business opened in 1952 and evolved into Pine Tree Barn. Visitors can choose to cut their own tree or select one of the pre-cut trees, which are harvested daily. (They can also purchase wreaths, garlands, ornaments and even furniture.) In 2013, the farm saw upgrades that included a cafe offering snacks such as hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, hot chocolate and coffee. Those looking for a full meal can visit the Granary Restaurant attached to the farm. 4374 Shreve Rd., Wooster 44691, 330/264-1014, thefarmsatpinetreebarn.com
